King managed to reproduce the colors, odors and music of his younger days. Enter the smell of gasoline, non-fucked-with-milkshakes, fruit shops along the high ways, enter the sounds of Duane Eddy, Glenn Miller, Billy Vaughn and Buddy Holly.

2010 was my Booktunes year in which I put up this website with a lot of help from my family, good old friends and new best friends. Some of them have been a part of this for a long time, others only recently joined the team - we only know each other by avatar.

I am looking forward to continue this project in 2011 and sincerely hope that everyone enjoys it as much as I do. All set now, Booktunes is ready to go to a new and higher level in the near future.

Some parts of the world already saw the release of Haruki Murakami’s 1q84. We were happy to have professional photographer Susumu Kohda doing the artwork for the 1q84 Booktunes… watch out for part 3.

We also had some professional writers jumping on board. Mina Witteman showed up and decided to write articles, give insights and pull her family on to this ride as our dreams got bigger. Booktunes’ own Ytje, known for here fabulous drawings, decided to pick up a pen and write an article, as did Wim and Rose.

Warmly welcomed by the Dutch authors and publishers and highlighted in the Italian Vanity Fair, we had our website working in five countries all through 2010. Now we have a 2011 tour scheduled through Belgium bookstores, a 2011 business plan targeting the US and plans on moving our HQ to the UK.

At the ending of this year I would like to say cheers to all of you… hardly able to explain how happy you made me. Cheers to all authors, writers, publishers, photographers, designers, tech thinkers, creative minds, business gentlemen, all Booktunes friends.

Have fun tonight, good luck in 2011!

Tomorrow Amsterdam will see Norwegian Wood, the movie by Anh Hung Tran. Based on Haruki Murakami's break-through novel, the movie tells the story of Toru Watanabe. Just after The Beatles showed up on iTunes, we managed to do an interview with Lars Saabye Christensen. This famous Norwegian novelist, poet, scriptwriter & musician is internationally known for his masterpiece The Half Brother. A masterpiece really, but of course Booktunes prefers some of his other titles: Beatles (aka Yesterday), Bly and Bisettelsen (aka The Walrus).

Reviewing our 'Big Booktunes Beatles To Do List' we came across Christensen's name only to found out he was in town! After some power reading we took the ferry to meet up with this friendly man. He shared the universal love for The Beatles and our love for Tom Waits... so stay tuned while we craft on the artwork and compile the soundtracks to his books!

The interview with Lars Saabye Christensen will be online next week through our interview page. Send us an email and stay updated.

Last month has been quite hectic to us, but how are you?

While we were looking for ways to bring the Booktunes project to a higher level, loads of 'typical booktunes books' saw the light. We managed to pick out some highlights including a free Booktunes download!

Mina took account of Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly and wrote a beautiful article on this long awaited novel. She did an amazing job sorting out all the music you really should have at hand when reading this powerful book. Donnelly herself gave answers to all our questions, reason enough for Mina to walk up to her in NY and meet her in person.

Then there was Life, the autobiography of Keith Richards. Follow the train of thoughts of our new Booktunes contributor and listen to the music accompanying Richards' wild ride here.

Our Dutch news of the month is about the first free Booktunes. Dutch news? Indeed, but as long as you are interested in political cartoons & proper hip-hop, you should definitely have a look on our page on TRIK's Decennium. Free download, books to win!

World news:
From now on The Beatles will be digitally available through iTunes, giving us the opportunity to finally discuss the books referring to their world famous material… more about this on our special Beatles page.

Blog news:
Our own Erik started blogging about the Booktunes project. Follow him if you like. Booktunes artist Ytje is already a pro, so is Mina. Film enthusiasts should check out Wim's amazing blog about movie stills.

Yesterday we were at the TRIK's Decennium book launch. Always nice to see a humble talented artist get praise in public.

After some free drinks on account of the Bezige Bij and some beats on the one and two's by Swotteam, well known Dutch cartoonists Joep Bertrams and Jos Collignon presented the first copy of Decennium to the proud TRIK.

Backed by a continuous flow of TRIK's cartoons, Boy Wonder got on stage and took TRIK back on a trip to his early days as a rapper.

Booktunes managed to get some limited book & CD combo's during the signing session. If you are a true TRIK and book and music aficionado just send an email… first come first price, but we have extra bonus gifts for those who send in a homemade political cartoon!

Of course we do have the CD available as a download on the Booktunes Decennium page. Now take some time to actually think about this last decennium that started at a certain date in 2001... we gladly direct you to Bol for the book.

Next week will be the release of TRIK's Decennium, the book that covers ten years of his Political Cartoons. TRIK is known for his appearances in the Nieuwe Revu, so Holland knows that a small square is all he needs to create an image that cuts straight to the heart of the matter. Intriguingly, with this collection of his best work comes a mixtape by Swotteam.

Hornby & Folds Avenue

Nick Hornby & Ben Folds have just released an album together on Nonesuch Records. A perfect match now that we hear it, so we deeply regret the fact that we have been sleeping on this one. Lonely Avenue hit stores already three weeks ago.. which leaves us with one option for today: [[Get all digital]] and do a quick review.

A dinner between the befriended English novelist and American singer-songwriter lead to the idea of making an album together. Nick started sending emails with song lyrics, Ben put them to music. The result we have here is enchanting: Nick’s prose, his beautiful words about everyday things, blended with the sound song writing and production of Ben Folds, topped with string arrangements by Paul Buckmaster.

Our personal discontent with the digital booklet provided by iTunes - a pdf of the ordinary CD-booklet - finds backing from Folds himself when it comes to the audio parts: The record was made to be pressed and played on vinyl after a production process involving 2-inch tapes and Direct Metal Mastering at Abbey Road’s. This leaves the Booktunes visitor two options: Buy the [[Lonely Avenue vinyl]] or, if you are a real book fiend, get that [[limited edition with four short Hornby stories]] through Amazon.

Feel free to check out Nick on Booktunes, while we continue playing our favorite new file ‘Claire’s Ninth’, originally a never published ’89 story.

Donnelly's Revolution

Booktunes is proud to present the soundtrack to Jennifer Donnelly's long awaited Revolution. Booktunes' Mina Witteman did an amazing job sorting out all the music this novel refers to, resulting in a huge playlist you really should have at hand when reading this powerful book.

'Under Donnelly’s crafty hands B-flat, F, G, E, the four saddest notes ever written, resonate in your ears as they become illustrative of Andi’s life, and when Donnelly transposes them into Alexandrine’s 18th century life she makes sure that those four notes will never ever leave you again. What Donnelly does in this compelling novel is what Andi wishes upon her father: she lets you hear the music, or in Andi’s words: ‘I’m wishing. Wishing he could hear music.'

Also, we have an interview with Jennifer Donnely for you here. Singning off with a quote from Donnelly herself:

'I have two priorities now: my family and my writing. The rest of it can go to hell. And pretty much has.'

Enjoy!

From early 2009 we have been working on the Booktunes project. Our aim is to bring literature and music closer together by building a website where readers can find the music to their beloved books.

Have you ever read a novel with musical references? Or a work of non-fiction in which tunes were being discussed? And what about biographies, graphic novels or YA literature? Let us bring the music you want to hear as a book and music lover.

Over the past few months the first titles have been added to the system. Large works by Haruki Murakami & Vikram Seth, for example, but also some interesting novels by less known writers from The Netherlands, which is where we are based. The system links to iTunes and to Amazon or Bol. It is up and running in the US, the UK, DE, BE and NL. Italy will follow on November 1, 2010. We will welcome our Italian visitors that day with an interview with bestselling author Nicola Lecca.

This week we are happy to present the Booktunes soundtrack of Revolution by Jennifer Donnelly. From what we hear, it looks like we are not the only one falling in love with this gripping story. To make it even better, we had Mina interview the author of this powerful book that makes you wish the world would be made of music and words only. Available on the 12th of October!

Of course, a newsletter would not be a newsletter without some regular Booktunes updatery:

Last week we went to London to meet Ramòn Chao and have a talk about The Train of Ice and Fire, his colourful story about the epic train journey with his son Manu through Colombia - a country run by drug lords, guerillas and paramilitaries. Unfortunately Ramòn had to stay in Mallorca for private reasons. We will, nevertheless, publish the music to this book soon and add the interview with Ramòn to our site later this year.

The play of Christine Otten's De Laatste Dichters (The Last Poets) is back on stage this week! Your last chance to enjoy the strong adaptation of Otten's intense story! Get more info on the play here. All info on the novel & the music plus an interview with Cristine is, of course, online at Booktunes.

Alex Austin's The Red Album of Asbury Park, in fact already a Booktunes classic, is being made into a Podcast! Get the first 12 chapters for free through Podiobooks.com, listen to the text, and hear the music by contemporary Asbury Park musicians.

Before we sign off, we really need to tell you that Booktunes is still on the lookout for contributors. Be it articles, soundtrack info or photo's inspired by novels, all welcome. If you think your country should be added to our system, feel free to tell us. If you are a national literature expert, all the better.

 Best,

Booktunes just published the soundtrack to Seleky's Ego Faber... feel free to enjoy both novel & music through our site, and to drag the artwork off the screen.

This debut by the promising Dutch writer Maurice pulls the reader into the nightlife scene, but also into the inner life of a generation that tries to find its way through partying, a generation that has to find a way past the debris of Twin Towers, past the assassinations of Fortuyn and Van Gogh, climaxing in the London Underground attacks.

Seleky seems confident about the way the book as a medium will go: the trendy music boosts off the paper pages and continues to resonate in the reader's ears in an attempt to prolong that short period the four friends share.

After some nice holiday time and some big parties, Booktunes is getting ready for a sunny Indian summer. Over here in The Netherlands it's been raining whole week, but let us shine a light on the Booktunes agenda for the next:

First week of September we will publish the soundtrack to Murray's Diamond Star Halo, and our fresh Booktunes crewmember Laura will have a talk with Tiffany herself.

First weekend I will be at Manuscripta with Mina and Tirza to do some networking at this opening of the Dutch Book Season. Yeah! More fun at the Ego Faber release party where Booktunes will be dj-ing. The tunes to be heard in this highly anticipated debut novel by Maurice Seleky will take the reader from Amsterdam to London to Berlin. Expect an interview plus the marvelous soundtrack here first thing Monday morning.

From there it will be more tunes, articles, interviews, news all the way to Christmas Eve. It will be a lot colder by then, it might be snowing. Please feel free to come visit us, read the articles, the books and get the music. Enjoy!

	Erik

Coming up: Stine Jensen - Ramón Chao - Alex Ross - Nicola Lecca - Alex van Galen - David Mitchell - Jennifer Donnelly - Lou Reed - Jan Brokken - Sylvie Simmons

We are really happy with Susumo joining our list of contributors. This photographer makes marvelous plates, tweaking his old and toycams to get the ulimate analog experience.

Booktunes on location

Last Friday Amsterdam saw the release of 1q84. Booktunes was present at the Selexyz bookstore to do some promotion for the site and, more important, play the tunes that have such an important roll in the new Murakami masterpiece. Last but not least, we played the Booktunes edits of these tunes to colour Christine Otten's beautiful reading about the music in Haruki's work.

Abdelkader Benali got on stage and wove a nice web of personal matters regarding Murakami's work and did not take it too serious when spoiling plots. 'But that's not what Murakmi's novels are about anyway'.

Luuk van Haute, one of the translators for Belgium & The Netherlands, gave a proper lecture about translating Murakami's work. Van Haute suggested we should read the Dutch unabridged editions since most English translations are heavily molested.. personally Booktunes wants to add that the fresh 1q84 could do with less text though.

AT5's Amsterdam Inc. got in with their camera's to do an interview with Erik de Loor... yes he might need some media training for his new role as Booktunes boss. See the result online here later today.

Booktunes 8: De Laatste Dichters (The Last Poets) is online now.

This musical companion to the great novel by Christine Otten defenitely expresses the feelings, emotions, scenes, rants, rhythms, rymes of the story of the Last Poets, the legendary African-American group of militant poets and civil rights activists. Their tumultuous lives are turned by Christine Otten into an powerful novel where emotions and frustrations are translated into poems, facts into fiction and mesmerizing thoughts into action. Read all about the book & Booktunes 8 here.

Christine Otten lives just around the corner, so this one was easy. We jumped on our bike, sat down in a fancy lunchroom, ordered a vegetable croquette and had a nice chat about her books & the music. Read the interview here.

English or American publishers should be aware of this talented Dutch writer. Have a look at her page at the Dutch Literature Fund.

English and American Writers should just hold on... there are rumours and rumors so click here if you want to stay updated on Otten overseas.

Lulu.com has been approved as an aggregator of content for Apple's iBookstore. Now there is a way for everyone to get a book published in the digital ePub format for iPad. Again, Apple is the big winner here, taking 30 percent of the retail price. Lulu takes 20 percent of what's left. Not bad for the writers either.

At Booktunes we are watching these developments very closely, curious to finding out what the future may bring. Should we already link to the digital readers, to Amazon's Kindle or Apple's iPad? Will this 'open book market' bring a valuable flood of fresh new authors writing about music?
